Having a "goodbye" song or two handy can be useful for those stressful moments when your young one has to deal with parting--seeing Mom go to work, or leaving Grandma's, or ending a play date. Singing a song is a good way to finesse the moment and make it more palatable. Especially as the idea grows in your child's noggin that for every "goodbye" song, there can be another "hello" song later on! You can also substitute "good night" for "goodbye" and make this a handy lullaby.

The melody of this song is based on "Goodnight Irene", a timeless folksong. The folksong group "The Weavers" recorded a version of "Goodnight Irene" that became a Billboard #1 hit song in 1958!
